SHS Men's Cross Country team wins NCHSAA State Championship The Sanderson Men's Cross Country Team won the NCHSAA 4A State Championship on Saturday, November 7 2009! It was the first state championship earned by a Sanderson cross country team in the 42 year history of the school. The Spartans won in exciting fashion by earning the victory by a slim margin (3 points) over Cap Seven sister school Broughton, the two-time defending state champions. Sanderson and Broughton had been running neck and neck all season long. The Cook sisters also ran well for the Spartans in the women's state meet.
The Spartans were led by Matt Schick who finished 13th overall and 8th among runners who ran on scoring teams. Three teammates finished among the top 20 individual runners - Philip Hathaway (17th overall and 12th among those on scoring teams), Matt Geisz (19th and 14th), and Mitchell Feldman (20th and 15th). Andrew White finished 54th overall and 40th among those on scoring teams to clinch the victory. The fasted five runners score for each scoring team. Ben Boyles (81st overall) and Patrick Crawford (114th overall) also competed for the Spartans.
Representatives of the 2009 Men's Cross Country team accept the State Champions Banner at the basketball game on January 22.
In the women's race, won by Green Hope High School, Sanderson's Allison Cook finished 30th and her sister, Samantha Cook finished 32nd among all runners
